Senior Applied AI Software Engineer

<div class="content-intro">MediaAlpha is a customer acquisition solutions provider powered by technology and data science. The company provides industry-leading solutions designed to reach consumers shopping within high-consideration categories such as property and casualty insurance, health insurance, life insurance, and more.</div>Hybrid role: 3 days/week in office
<h2>Role Overview</h2>
As a Principal Software Engineer at MediaAlpha, you will be a technical leader accountable at the ecosystem level. You own the architecture, health, and strategic technical direction across large and complex systems that span multiple teams—ensuring sound design, operational excellence, and alignment with business needs across the ecosystem. You will shape broad architecture, partner with engineering and business leaders to define roadmaps, and drive technical standards that the organization builds on.
Principal Engineers are hands-on technical leaders. You write code, make architectural decisions, and solve the hardest technical problems in the ecosystem. Your work sets the standard for engineering quality and shapes how systems evolve. The difference at this level is that your technical contributions have ecosystem-wide impact—you define the patterns, frameworks, and architectural direction that other engineers build within.
Everything we build, decide, and deliver is measured against four pillars: Fast, Flexible, Robust, and Transparent. Principal Engineers serve these pillars through architectural clarity that eliminates wasted motion, systems designed for change and adaptability, patterns and standards that ensure long-term health, and active ambassadorship that makes technical direction visible across the organization.
The ideal candidate is a masterful engineer who operates at ecosystem scope—driving technical strategy across teams and groups, shaping architecture that spans organizational boundaries, and developing senior technical leaders. You operate effectively across organizational boundaries, mentor and lead engineers throughout the organization, and drive technical excellence at ecosystem scale. We are an intentionally small organization, designed for agility, speed, collaboration, and workability, where Principal Engineers serve as the technical authorities and go-to leaders across multiple teams and groups.
<h2>Responsibilities</h2>
<h3>Ecosystem Architecture &amp; Technical Ownership</h3>
<ul>
<li>Own large and complex systems end to end with accountability at the ecosystem level—ensuring sound requirements, design, architecture, coding, processes, and operations for holistically complete solutions</li>
<li>Shape broad architecture by leading projects involving multiple large components, complex libraries, or major pieces of application infrastructure, with multi-quarter strategic vision</li>
<li>Proactively monitor and maintain the health of all systems within your area of accountability, identifying and driving high-risk, long-term tradeoff decisions at the ecosystem level</li>
</ul>
<h3>Engineering Standards &amp; Technical Strategy</h3>
<ul>
<li>Define new patterns and advanced methodologies that ensure all engineering work maintains standards for maintainability, scalability, security, reliability, privacy, and compliance at ecosystem scale</li>
<li>Partner with technical leaders to establish and evangelize standards for architecture, code quality, and system design across the engineering organization</li>
<li>Identify and proactively tackle system-wide and organizational technical debt, driving measurable improvements in platform health and engineering effectiveness</li>
</ul>
<h3>Leadership &amp; Cross-Organizational Influence</h3>
<ul>
<li>Lead at the group level as a role model; actively mentor engineers throughout the organization and guide senior technical leaders in decision-making at the feature and component level</li>
<li>Develop senior technical leaders toward broader impact—growing their ability to own systems, set standards, and influence architecture beyond their immediate team</li>
<li>Engage cross-team and cross-organizational stakeholders to define strategy, principles, goals, and requirements that align technical direction with business needs</li>
<li>Represent groups and ecosystems to the broader company; be accountable for ecosystem infrastructure, design, and architecture and serve as the go-to technical authority across teams</li>
</ul>
<h2>Requirements</h2>
<ul>
<li>10+ years experience in software development with a track record of increasing technical scope and organizational influence</li>
<li>Demonstrated ability to own and drive ecosystem-level technical initiatives spanning multiple teams and multiple quarters from conception through completion</li>
<li>Track record of defining architectural patterns, engineering standards, and frameworks that are adopted and referenced across an organization</li>
<li>Experience mentoring and developing engineers at multiple levels, including guiding senior technical decision-making</li>
<li>Proven ability to shape broad architecture and lead complex, multi-component projects that span organizational boundaries</li>
<li>Strong understanding of software engineering methodologies, system design, and architecture at the ecosystem level</li>
<li>Strong SQL skills and understanding of database and query optimizations</li>
<li>Excellent communication skills with the ability to represent technical strategy and architectural direction to both engineering and business audiences</li>
<li>Ability to identify and drive high-risk, long-term tradeoff decisions with sound judgment and clear rationale</li>
<li>A self-starter, comfortable with ambiguity, who creates clarity and structure for others</li>
<li>B.S. in a technical discipline preferred; equivalent experience and a proven track record of results will be valued equally</li>
</ul>
<h2>The Bottom Line</h2>
The measure of a Principal Engineer’s success is the health and trajectory of the ecosystems they own.
The best Principal Engineers define the architectural direction that guides technical decisions across teams, set engineering standards that raise the bar for the entire organization, solve the problems no one else can, and develop the engineers around them into stronger technical leaders.

Principal Software Engineer

<div class="content-intro">MediaAlpha is a customer acquisition solutions provider powered by technology and data science. The company provides industry-leading solutions designed to reach consumers shopping within high-consideration categories such as property and casualty insurance, health insurance, life insurance, and more.</div>Role Overview
MediaAlpha (NYSE: MAX) operates the world’s largest insurance advertising marketplace, connecting leading carriers and agents with high-intent insurance shoppers at scale. Our owned-and-operated media properties are a cornerstone of our business, and we’re building the paid media function that will drive transformational growth.
We’re looking for a Senior Director of Paid Media to lead that effort. Reporting into the VP of Growth Marketing, this is a high-impact, high-ownership role: you’ll set the strategy, own the budget, and build the team. You are first and foremost a paid social expert - specifically Meta - but you think like an investment manager across every channel you touch. You know how creative drives downstream lead quality, not just click-through rate, and you’re excited about using AI to produce and test creative at a scale most teams only dream about.
This role isn’t about managing agency relationships or reporting on what happened last week. It’s about building a best-in-class paid media capability from the ground up, inside the company that powers more insurance advertising than anyone else on the planet.
&nbsp;
Responsibilities
<ul>
<li>Own the full paid media strategy across social, search, native, display, and retargeting, with Meta as your primary channel and proving ground</li>
<li>Set channel-level investment strategies, budget allocation frameworks, scaling criteria, and ROI guardrails across the portfolio</li>
<li>Define the strategic direction for paid media, aligning it with MediaAlpha’s broader growth strategy</li>
<li>Ensure positive ROI across all paid media investment; own performance accountability end-to-end</li>
<li>Hire, lead, coach, and develop a team of channel-specific analysts (paid social, paid search, native/display, etc.)</li>
<li>Translate campaign performance into clear, executive-ready narratives that connect channel metrics to business outcomes: cost per lead, revenue per lead, GP contribution, and margin</li>
<li>Partner directly with cross-functional leadership, extending your influence beyond the paid media team</li>
<li>Leverage AI tooling (both off-the-shelf and custom-built) to accelerate creative production and UGC video at scale</li>
<li>Build and run a high-velocity creative testing engine across static, video, and UGC formats, with a clear methodology for learning and scaling winners</li>
<li>Understand how ad creative affects downstream quality and conversion, and use that lens to guide every creative and targeting decision</li>
<li>Ensure all paid media activity complies with applicable laws, regulations, and platform policies — including TCPA and state-specific advertising requirements relevant to the insurance vertical</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
Requirements
<ul>
<li>You have personally managed $1M+ per month in Meta ad spend.&nbsp; This is a hard floor, not a preference; you’ve done this hands-on, not just at a strategic level</li>
<li>A proven track record running profitable, ROI-positive paid media in the lead generation space. eCommerce or brand-building backgrounds are not the right fit for this role</li>
<li>Experience working in a performance-first environment where every dollar of spend is expected to earn its place</li>
<li>A genuine command of what makes paid social work: creative diagnosis, audience strategy, bidding mechanics, and the ability to distinguish a creative problem from a targeting problem from a measurement problem</li>
<li>Experience running ads across search, display, native, and retargeting platforms - even if Meta is your primary channel</li>
<li>Experience building or scaling a paid media team, including hiring and developing junior channel specialists</li>
<li>Genuine enthusiasm for using AI tools to accelerate creative production at scale</li>
<li>A strong understanding of how ad creative, landing page experience, and lead intent interact to drive downstream quality, not just top-of-funnel volume</li>
<li>Experience in the insurance vertical or adjacent regulated categories (financial services, health, legal) is strongly preferred.</li>
<li>Familiarity with lead gen compliance requirements, including TCPA, state-level advertising rules, and platform-specific policy constraints is strongly preferred</li>
</ul>

Technical Program Manager

<div class="content-intro">MediaAlpha is a customer acquisition solutions provider powered by technology and data science. The company provides industry-leading solutions designed to reach consumers shopping within high-consideration categories such as property and casualty insurance, health insurance, life insurance, and more.</div>Hybrid: 3x/week in-office
<h3>Role Overview</h3>
MediaAlpha is looking for a Vice President of Strategy &amp; Development to join our team. This is a high-impact individual contributor role reporting directly to the CEO.
This role sits at the intersection of partnerships and growth. You'll build and manage strategic relationships outside our standard carrier and publisher channels, including building MediaAlpha's presence with AI and LLM platforms as distribution and demand channels evolve. You'll also identify and develop new opportunities, scoping products, launching pilots, and making the case for bigger bets. We're not looking for someone to run a strategy process. We're looking for someone who gets into the business, figures out how things actually work, and builds.
The right candidate brings deep strategic and analytical skills, genuine curiosity, and the operating instincts to move from insight to execution. Success here means developing a real understanding of MediaAlpha's advertising marketplace, our carrier and agent relationships, our publisher partnerships, and the broader insurance distribution landscape. You'll learn how the business works before recommending how to change it, and earn trust with carriers, partners, and internal stakeholders through rigor and follow-through.
&nbsp;
<h3>Responsibilities</h3>
<h4>Strategic Partnerships</h4>
Identify, develop, and manage partnerships outside our standard demand and supply models, including:
<ul>
<li>AI and LLM platforms, such as ad platform integrations and AI-native distribution</li>
<li>Data providers covering pre-fill, targeting, predictive, and telematics data</li>
<li>Insurtech ecosystem partners: raters, CRMs, LMS platforms, and agency groups</li>
<li>Core insurance platforms such as Guidewire</li>
<li>Non-traditional demand channels including paid search providers and agency networks</li>
<li>Other partner categories that emerge from market trends or strategic priorities</li>
</ul>
<h4>Growth Strategy</h4>
Identify and develop opportunities that expand MediaAlpha's footprint over time:
<ul>
<li>Size new markets and adjacencies we are considering entering</li>
<li>Scope new products or features that emerge from partnership and market development work</li>
<li>Launch and manage pilots that test new business models or distribution approaches</li>
<li>Build investment cases for opportunities that warrant larger organizational commitment</li>
<li>Stay current on emerging trends across insurtech, adtech, and AI, and translate that into actionable opportunities for the business</li>
</ul>
&nbsp;
<h3>Requirements</h3>
<ul>
<li>10 or more years of experience, with at least 5 years owning and closing complex partnerships or business development initiatives, not just supporting them</li>
<li>A track record of building new business opportunities from the ground up through execution, in environments where the playbook did not already exist</li>
<li>Strong commercial instincts: the ability to assess a partnership or market opportunity, build a clear model, and drive a decision</li>
<li>Proven ability to influence and align cross-functional stakeholders, including executive audiences, without direct authority</li>
<li>Experience leading external partnerships in technology, media, or financial services</li>
<li>Familiarity with digital marketing, advertising technology, or customer acquisition is strongly preferred</li>
<li>Knowledge of the insurance or insurtech landscape is a plus</li>
</ul>
Compensation &amp; Benefits
We are excited to offer a competitive base pay range of $275,000 to $350,000 per year for this position, based on experience and qualifications. But that's not all - as a valued member of our team, you will also have access to an array of top-notch benefits, including:
&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Annual bonus program and participation in our Restricted Stock Unit program</li>
<li>100% Employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for you, your dependents, and spouse or registered domestic partner</li>
<li>100% Employer paid long term disability, and life insurance</li>
<li>401(k) retirement plan with matching contributions to help you plan for your future</li>
<li>Open Paid Time Off policy with a Brthday Hookie day off, 13 holiday, and 5 Recharge days</li>
<li>Professional development reimbursement along with a subscription to LinkedIn Learning&nbsp;</li>
<li>Cell Phone, Wellness, and Internet expense reimbursement, along with a subscription to the Calm App</li>
<li>100% fully paid parental leave for team members up to 22 weeks for the primary caregiver and 12 weeks for the secondary caregiver&nbsp;</li>
<li>Dog-friendly offices (LA and AZ) along with a $300 pet adoption reimbursement&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
