IonQ is making quantum platforms more accessible and impactful than ever before. &nbsp;</div>Location:&nbsp;Oxford, UK Office commitment: Hybrid
The Role:
Quantum is now, and it's built here. Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we're building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today's supercomputers cannot solve.
We're looking for an enthusiastic and highly technical Staff Software Engineer for our non-realtime controllers team who will thrive in our dynamic cross-disciplinary environment. You'd be working closely with our skilled software engineers, our systems teams who operate the physical quantum computers, and our world-leading quantum scientists to build and operate the software that controls the hardware surrounding our quantum computers. Previous exposure to quantum systems is not required.
You will take on our most demanding hardware integrations and the framework work that makes every other controller better. This is a hands-on engineering role: you would be the most experienced engineer writing controllers, not the one directing others to write them.
A working quantum computer is far more than the ion trap and its real-time control electronics. It depends on a fleet of supporting hardware, including cryogenic compressors, vacuum pumps, power supplies, lasers, temperature controllers, wavemeters and cameras, that has to be kept observable, controllable and reliable. The timing-critical operations such as gate waveforms and ion transport run on dedicated real-time FPGA systems, while this team owns everything that does not need hard timing guarantees. These services run on general-purpose Linux hardware and must be rock-solid, because a failed compressor or an un-noticed pressure drift takes a whole machine offline.
Responsibilities:
This is a hands-on engineering role. Your influence comes from the code you ship and review, and from the problems you take off everyone else's plate.
Key responsibilities include:
<ul>
<li>Take on our most demanding device integrations, and do the deep diagnosis of problems that only appear against real hardware in a live lab.</li>
<li>Remove whole classes of failure across the fleet, rather than instances of them.</li>
<li>Improve the shared framework yourself, and bring the existing controllers along with each change.</li>
<li>Build the tooling, simulators and test infrastructure that let the whole team move faster.</li>
<li>Evolve how our services are deployed and operated as the fleet grows, and make the fleet observable enough that problems are found early.</li>
<li>Raise the bar of everyone around you through the code you write and the reviews you give.</li>
</ul>
Requirements:
To be successful, you will need deep systems engineering experience, a track record of shipping and operating reliable services, and the judgement to tell a problem worth solving structurally from one worth patching. We're looking for someone who wants to stay hands-on in the code at this level rather than move away from it.
You’d be a great fit with:
<ul>
<li>Expert systems engineering skills. Our controllers are written in Rust, so either solid Rust experience or deep proficiency in another systems language and the appetite to work in a Rust codebase, including async programming.</li>
<li>Experience building and operating networked services in production such as gRPC or REST, with a real grasp of error handling, observability and failure modes.</li>
<li>Experience of hardware and instrument protocols and interfaces such as SCPI, Modbus, serial and Ethernet.</li>
<li>A reputation as the person people bring the undiagnosable bug to, and the ability to prioritise work with a clear understanding of critical versus urgent items.</li>
<li>Excellent communication skills both within software and across disciplines.</li>
</ul>

The Role:&nbsp;
We are looking for a Staff Full Stack Software Engineer for Application Engineering. As a Software Engineer on the Applications Engineer team, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to deliver real-world applications and deliver value from the jump forward in computing that quantum solving represents.
We don't just build the world's best quantum computers - we apply cutting-edge quantum tools to real-world problems. Until this year, our team for Applications Research has been building prototypes and doing research, by working closely with our customers. Our new department, Applications Engineering, transforms those prototypes and research into applications for broad use. Our work makes those innovations available to more people and businesses; as libraries, as APIs, and ultimately as whole SaaS applications.
Our Application Engineering team has a commitment to engaging user experience and showing quantum advantage, not just talking about it. We are especially focused on clearly communicating the value of hybrid computing, and making clear outputs to visualize domain specific problems. It’s a chance to shape how quantum computing is conceptualized in contrast to classical computing&nbsp;
To support that goal and lay the groundwork for future quantum-enhanced services, this role will also help polish our internal tools, APIs, and integrations. Along with humans, other digital tools and systems will need to easily read and parse the solutions we generate. That means designing APIs and library interfaces, often in domain specific terms or formats, to speak to experts in tools and systems they already know deeply.&nbsp;
You will be a key contributor in taking novel quantum approaches to cutting-edge problems, and turning them into clear concise tools. You will help shape how everyday developers visualize and use quantum computing to solve problems, in close collaboration with Developer Tools, Infrastructure, and Product teams.
The ideal candidate will be excited about working on a chemistry simplification via Quantum Computing tool one month, and working on visualizing novel topology solver the next.&nbsp;
Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Creating simple and clear interfaces in cooperation with domain experts. We bridge quantum computing to specific domain, by creating clear API interfaces in the language and visuals domain experts are experts in.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Designing the API endpoints and intuitive software library interfaces, making applications and tools easy to maintain and update</li>
<li>Working closely with peers in Applications, Developer Tools, and Field Engineering teams to share best practices and give feedback on internal tools, especially rich data API’s to support large data sets, and where applicable, visualization</li>
<li>Mentoring junior developers with the team.</li>
</ul>
Requirements:
<ul>
<li>Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience</li>
<li>8+ years of experience as a full stack developer, preferably in backends based on JavaScript, Python, Golang&nbsp;</li>
<li>8+ years of experience in REST, GraphQL, or gRPC frameworks for robust data delivery</li>
<li>Previous work in scientific computing, quantum computing, or a technical consulting fields</li>
<li>Experience building or supporting rich UIs, especially with data visualization tools like <a href="http://three.js">three.js</a>, D3, WebGL&nbsp;</li>
<li>A track record of shipping applications that solve real business problems</li>
<li>Familiarity with Agentic AI coding tools and techniques such as skills, docstring generation, code review, and best practices for AI coding</li>
</ul>
Preferred Qualifications:
<ul>
<li>10+ years of experience as a full stack developer, preferably in Python or Golang as a backend language,&nbsp;</li>
<li>5+ years frontend experience in&nbsp;<a href="http://three.js">Three.js</a>, D3 or WebGL, for heavier visualization.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Previous work in quantum computing, quantum algorithms, or a degree in quantum physics</li>
<li>Experience in scientific computing, especially in numpy, pandas, or in C/C++</li>
<li>Experience packaging backend API’s and UI into containerized solutions for deployment to cloud services such as AWS, GCP, etc.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

Our quantum computing services are available through all major cloud providers, while we also meet the needs of networking and sensing customers across land, sea, air, and space.
We're looking for an enthusiastic and highly technical Senior Software Engineer for our non-realtime controllers team who will thrive in our dynamic cross-disciplinary environment. You will be working closely with our skilled software engineers, our systems teams who operate the physical quantum computers, and our world-leading quantum scientists to build and operate the software that controls the hardware surrounding our quantum computers. Previous exposure to quantum systems is not required.
You will own areas of the hardware control surface end to end, from the device protocol up to a service running reliably across our fleet. This is a hands-on engineering role and stays that way as you grow.
This is a hands-on engineering role, balancing delivery of your own areas with support for the teams and scientists who depend on them.
Key responsibilities include:
<ul>
<li>Own a group of device controllers end to end, covering API design, implementation, rollout and ongoing operational health.</li>
<li>Make services robust against the ways real instruments fail.</li>
<li>Bring devices onto our current framework, and roll the result out across the fleet without disrupting running experiments.</li>
<li>Improve the shared framework where a problem turns out to be common to many controllers rather than specific to one.</li>
<li>Work closely with the systems teams and scientists who depend on these services, and strengthen observability, health checking and alerting.</li>
<li>Raise the standard of the code around you through review, and bring less experienced engineers on by working alongside them.</li>
</ul>
Requirements:
To be successful, you will need experience working with Linux based systems and interfacing with hardware, and a track record of making software behave well against unreliable external dependencies. We're looking for someone who can own a problem area with little supervision and judge where robustness is worth the effort.
You’d be a great fit with:
<ul>
<li>Strong systems engineering skills. Our controllers are written in Rust, so either solid Rust experience or deep proficiency in another systems language and the appetite to work in a Rust codebase, including async programming.</li>
<li>Experience designing and operating networked services such as gRPC or REST, with a real grasp of error handling, observability and failure modes.</li>
<li>Experience of hardware and instrument protocols and interfaces such as SCPI, Modbus, serial and Ethernet.</li>
<li>Comfortable owning the production behaviour of what you build, not just its correctness in test.</li>
<li>Excellent communication skills both within software and across disciplines, and an interest in helping other engineers get better at the craft without wanting to stop building yourself.</li>
</ul>

Travel: Up to 10% domestic Job ID: 1605
The Role:&nbsp;
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer. As a Senior Software Engineer, you'll be part of a cross-functional team whose mission is to lead IonQ on its journey to build the world's best quantum computers to solve the world's most complex problems. In this role, you will apply your deep technical expertise to build and maintain scalable, reliable, and researcher-friendly software that empowers our scientists to accelerate their research and development efforts in quantum networking, computing, and sensing. You will play a pivotal role in shaping our software architecture, driving SDLC best practices, improving system stability and observability, and mentoring a talented team to deliver innovative solutions that push the boundaries of quantum technology.&nbsp;
Responsibilities:
<ul>
<li>Develop, maintain, and support the research and development (R&amp;D) software used by our scientists, ensuring its stability, performance, and day-to-day reliability.</li>
<li>Own the general software development lifecycle for our R&amp;D codebases, including triaging and fixing bugs, addressing regressions, and improving long-term code health.</li>
<li>Improve observability across our R&amp;D software stack (logging, metrics, tracing, alerting) so issues are caught early and root-caused quickly.</li>
<li>Contribute to the design, implementation, and management of our backend and frontend for R&amp;D data acquisition.</li>
<li>Design, build, and maintain the continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to ensure quality and rapid, reliable deployments.</li>
<li>Design and implement robust systems for the automated calibration and bring-up of lab equipment.</li>
<li>Review scientist-contributed code, providing constructive feedback and guidance on code cleanliness, architecture, and best practices.</li>
<li>Interface with other IonQ software teams to ensure alignment and integration across systems.</li>
<li>Proactively identify opportunities to make R&amp;D software more accessible, scalable, and self-service for scientists.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
Requirements:
<ul>
<li>Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.</li>
<li>5+ years professional experience in software engineering, including work on complex, cross-functional systems.</li>
<li>Strong proficiency in Python, and comfort working below it when needed: debugging across the stack, reasoning about concurrency and async, networking protocols, and performance profiling.</li>
<li>Experience owning the full SDLC for production software, including debugging, incident response, and ongoing maintenance.</li>
<li>Experience designing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.</li>
<li>Experience writing clear, concise, and comprehensive user-facing documentation, including tutorials, API reference guides, and internal knowledge base articles.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
Preferred Qualifications:
<ul>
<li>8+ years of professional software experience, ideally in a scientific or R&amp;D environment, supporting research teams.</li>
<li>Experience developing software for hardware control, automation, or data acquisition.</li>
<li>Demonstrated experience mentoring and providing technical leadership to other engineers.</li>
<li>Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and modern DevOps practices.</li>
<li>Experience with database design and management.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
What success looks like:
<ul>
<li>In your first few months, you'll have onboarded across our R&amp;D codebases, started shipping fixes and reviewing scientist contributions, and identified the biggest stability and observability gaps to tackle.</li>
<li>You act as a trusted partner to the scientists on the team: helping them write and structure code, supporting their tooling and documentation needs, running code reviews focused on software quality (organization, readability, maintainability), and flagging cases where deeper science-related review might be needed. No physics or quantum background required, but genuine interest in supporting research work is essential.</li>
<li>By the end of your first six months, you'll own the SDLC health of at least one major codebase, with measurably improved observability and faster diagnosis of production issues.</li>
<li>By the end of your first year, you'll be a recognized technical leader on the team, having driven at least one cross-cutting initiative that improved stability or contributor experience across our stack, and actively mentoring other engineers or scientist contributors.&nbsp;</li>
