About Docker
Docker has been one of the most loved brands in developer tooling, trusted by more than 20 million monthly users and over 20 billion container image pulls. From solo founders to the world's largest companies, developers rely on Docker to build, share, and run their applications across our suite of products including Docker Desktop, Docker Hub, and Docker Scout. We are a globally distributed, remote-first team building the tools that define how software gets built and delivered. As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default._______________________________________________________________________We're building AI-native development practices into how this team works at a foundational level. That means infrastructure design needs to account for a new kind of collaborator: AI agents that generate, deploy, and operate software. The Staff Infrastructure Engineer on this team will keep systems running, define what safe, observable, AI-assisted infrastructure operations look like in practice, and set the standard for how the broader engineering organization follows.
What you'll work on
The Billing Platform Engineering team owns the systems that make Docker's commercial model real. You'll work on problems like:

How do we design infrastructure that makes AI-generated deployments safe to ship and easy to roll back?

How do we instrument billing systems so that failures — billing miscalculations, entitlement gaps, payment errors — are detected immediately and unambiguously?

How do we build infrastructure that scales with usage-based billing workloads without manual intervention?

How do we make the developer experience on this team faster and more reliable — local environments, CI/CD pipelines, deployment tooling?

Responsibilities

Own and evolve the infrastructure supporting Billing Platform services: compute, storage, networking, CI/CD, and observability

Design and maintain IaC (Terraform) for billing system infrastructure on AWS; set module patterns and standards for the team

Build and own observability systems — metrics, logging, alerting — with a focus on billing accuracy and payment reliability

Define deployment patterns and runbooks that work well in an AI-agent-assisted development workflow: clear rollback procedures, safe promotion gates, automated validation

Partner with software engineers on service design — bringing infrastructure constraints and operational requirements into the conversation before code is written

Identify systemic risks and drive improvements that span team or organizational boundaries

Lead incident response for billing system issues. This role may require participation in an on-call rotation to provide support outside of standard business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as needed.

Mentor engineers across the team; your technical judgment should raise the floor for everyone

Qualifications

8+ years in platform, infrastructure, or SRE roles supporting production SaaS systems at scale

Deep AWS expertise: ECS or EKS, RDS (Postgres preferred), networking, IAM, cost management — you've operated these systems under real load and real incidents

Expert-level Terraform; you've designed reusable module patterns and set standards others follow

Experience building and owning observability stacks (Datadog, Grafana, or similar) at an organizational level — not just using them

Strong familiarity with CI/CD systems — Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent — including pipeline design and developer experience ownership

Kubernetes at an operational and architectural level

A track record of identifying systemic risks and driving improvements that span team or organizational boundaries

Security-first mindset: threat modeling, blast radius analysis, least-privilege by default, audit trails as a design requirement

Strong written English; at Staff level, written communication is how you scale your influence across teams

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

What sets you apart
You don't wait for problems to be handed to you — you find them, frame them, and drive the solution. You've operated at a scope where your decisions affected multiple teams or systems, and you know how to build consensus and move work forward without direct authority. You've thought seriously about what infrastructure needs to look like when AI agents are generating and shipping code — safe deployment patterns, strong observability, clean rollback — and you want to help define that standard here. Experience with billing, payments, or financial systems infrastructure is a meaningful plus.
What to Expect First 30 Days
You will ship code in your first week. We run an agent-first development workflow — infrastructure changes start with a plan, specifications are written before generation, and every change is reviewed before it merges — and onboarding is no exception. You will get hands-on with the infrastructure supporting Billing Platform services early, shadow on-call, and build a clear picture of the system before you start making bigger changes. By the end of 30 days you will have shipped real work and know where the most important problems are.
First 90 Days
You will have taken ownership of one or more infrastructure components and delivered an improvement from design to production with measurable impact. You will be an active participant in deployment and reliability discussions, bringing infrastructure constraints and operational requirements into the conversation early — before code is written. You will be a full participant in the on-call rotation and have begun shaping the team's technical direction.
One Year Outlook
You will be the team's trusted authority on billing infrastructure. You will have driven meaningful improvements to observability, deployment safety, or platform reliability — and your work will be directly visible in the resilience and correctness of systems that handle real financial transactions for millions of Docker users. You will have helped define what AI-agent-assisted infrastructure operations look like done right, and that standard will be visible beyond this team.Docker considers sponsorship on a case-by-case basis based on business needs.

Compensation & EquityUnited States: $170,350 – $275,550 + equity______________________________________________________________________
Posting Information

Open vacancy: This posting is for an existing open role.

AI in hiring: Docker may use AI-assisted tools during our recruiting process.

Interview recordings: Candidates will be invited to opt in to interview recordings to support interviewer calibration and consistent evaluations. We are a globally distributed, remote-first team building the tools that define how software gets built and delivered. As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default. The Developer Experience team builds the backend systems and product capabilities that help developers understand, secure and ship software with confidence. The team powers important parts of Docker Scout, Docker Hardened Images and the workflows that turn supply-chain data into useful developer experiences. Our systems are deliberately polyglot. Today that includes Clojure and Go services, event-driven workflows, Kafka, legacy Datomic components and newer Spanner-backed services. We will keep evolving the stack as the product and business change. We are looking for an adaptable backend engineer who can become effective in an unfamiliar codebase, choose technology pragmatically and help other engineers do the same. Clojure experience is useful, but it is not a requirement and this is not a Clojure-specialist role.We make extensive use of AI-assisted engineering tools. We expect engineers to use them thoughtfully, validate their output and remain accountable for the quality, security and operability of what ships. At Staff level, you will also help the team turn good individual practice into repeatable workflows, controls and shared standards. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will lead ambiguous, cross-team work from problem definition through measurable outcomes. You will remain hands-on in code while shaping architecture, raising operational standards and creating enough clarity for several engineers and partner teams to move quickly. Work may span developer-facing features, build and artefact workflows, data and event pipelines, platform evolution and integrations with Docker's build and security systems.
Success in This Role Looks Like
You will succeed by finding the highest-leverage problem, creating momentum before every detail is known and bringing people with you. Within your first year, teams should be delivering more confidently because you have made system boundaries clearer, reduced operational risk, connected technical choices to customer outcomes and helped senior engineers take on larger work.
Responsibilities

Set technical direction for major backend and developer-experience initiatives across Clojure, Go As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default. The Secure Build team builds and operates the infrastructure behind Docker's container builds. The team owns Docker Build Cloud and Auto Builds while developing the next generation of trusted build and CI capabilities.Software is being changed faster than ever, but CI remains a bottleneck and a major trust boundary. Developers and software agents need to run build and test work quickly without exposing secrets, losing local-to-cloud parity or accepting an unverifiable result. Our direction is to make Docker the trusted place CI runs and turn that constraint into an accelerator. The technical work spans Go services, container and build technology, cloud infrastructure, isolated execution and software supply-chain security. It also requires disciplined operation of the production systems customers rely on today. Docker Build Cloud and Auto Builds will need targeted reliability and operational improvements while useful capabilities evolve towards a coherent Secure Build platform. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will turn these problems into practical product and technical outcomes. You will own substantial work from discovery and design through production, make sound security and reliability trade-offs, and stay close to the experience of developers and the agents they delegate work to.We make extensive use of AI-assisted engineering tools. Senior Software Engineer, Secure Build

As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default. The Docker Sandboxes team is building the runtime that lets AI coding agents run safely on a developer's machine: disposable, isolated microVM sandboxes that each get their own Docker daemon, filesystem, and network. This is the core of Docker's sbx product: developers can give an agent the autonomy it needs to get real work done without it ever touching the host, and tear the whole environment down when it's finished. The successful candidate is a technical, product-minded engineer with deep experience building secure, isolated runtime environments (sandboxes, containers, or VMs) and a track record of shipping and owning that kind of infrastructure in production at scale. They think naturally about isolation and security boundaries, understand the tradeoffs involved in running untrusted or semi-trusted workloads safely, and can reason confidently about a system that spans multiple surface areas. They can drive clarity and consensus on hard, ambiguous problems that cross team and component boundaries, raise the bar for engineering quality wherever they work, thrive in a remote-first environment, communicate clearly across time zones, work with our users, while bringing curiosity and craftsmanship to hard problems. Please note: this role is currently prioritizing candidates currently located in the Eastern time zone (US or Canada), or in the EU.
Responsibilities

Design, develop, and lead improvements to the sandboxes product across agent integration, tool permissions, and developer-facing workflows.

Investigate and resolve correctness, performance, and stability issues in the agent integration layer across macOS, Windows, and Linux.

Drive the reliability and performance of sandbox creation, session management, and teardown for AI agent workloads.

Collaborate with peers, Product, and adjacent teams to evolve the architecture as requirements grow.

Mentor engineers on the team and set the bar in design reviews and code reviews.

Engage with the open source and agentic development community around sandboxing, MCP, and related ecosystems.

Participate in on-call rotations and respond to critical stability issues affecting users.

Document your work clearly and share knowledge with the rest of the team.

Qualifications

8+ years of software engineering experience, with demonstrated technical leadership on production systems at scale.

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Experience building developer tools, desktop applications, or runtime infrastructure used directly by developers.

Familiarity with the agentic software development ecosystem: how coding agents work and how tools like Claude Code, Codex, or similar agents interact with their environment.

Ability to reason about isolation and security boundaries: what a sandbox should and shouldn't expose, and how to make safe defaults obvious to users.

Experience driving architecture and technical strategy across multiple engineers or teams.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Comfortable working with a high degree of autonomy in a remote-first environment.

What to Expect

First 30 Days

Build an understanding of our codebase.

Meet the people on your team and those adjacent to it.

Build an understanding of the products we are shipping and our near-term technical priorities.

Deliver small fixes or improvements.

First 90 Days

Lead the design and development of a significant improvement or feature of the local sandboxes stack.

Engage with our open source project and the relevant upstream communities.

Shape the team's technical direction, and drive architecture discussions.

One Year Outlook (First Year)

Deliver measurable improvements to the correctness and performance of sandboxes.

Become a recognized technical owner of key parts of the codebase and a go-to technical leader for the local runtime.

Help us define the longer-term technical strategy for the filesystem layer in a way that fits with Product and Business goals, and rally the team behind it.

Docker considers visa sponsorship on a case-by-case basis based on business needs.Compensation & EquityEU: €94,040 – €155,650+ equityUnited States: $160,900 – $260,700 + equityPerks

Freedom & flexibility; fit your work around your life

Designated quarterly Whaleness Days plus end of year Whaleness break

Home office setup; we want you comfortable while you work

16 weeks of paid Parental leave (after 6 months of employment)

Technology stipend equivalent to $100 USD net/month

PTO plan that encourages you to take time to do the things you enjoy

Training stipend for conferences, courses and classes

Equity; we are a growing start-up and want all employees to have a share in the success of the company

Docker Swag

Medical benefits, retirement and holidays vary by country

Remote-first culture, with offices in Seattle and Paris

Docker embraces diversity and equal opportunity. Staff Software Engineer, Cloud Sandboxes (West Coast)

As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default.Docker seeks a Principal Software Engineer to define the technical vision and architecture for our internal Developer Tools team. This is a rare opportunity to establish how software is designed, built, shipped, and operated at Docker. With the addition of AI we are modernizing our SDLC and building the mechanisms that make the right way the easy way for every engineer. You'll own the technical strategy across four interconnected pillars:Platform Engineering & Self-Service: Design and build the internal developer platform that empowers teams across Docker to unblock themselves, rapidly scaffolding, prototyping, deploying, and operating their own services and tools.CI/CD & Build Systems: Define Docker's technical approach to continuous integration, delivery, and build infrastructure. Establish architectural standards for pipeline tooling, GitOps deployment patterns, build substrate, and release engineering. As Principal Software Engineer, you'll partner with engineering leadership across Docker, principal engineers, Security, Infrastructure, and the service teams to author the SDLC tenets that underpin all of this work, and build the mechanisms those tenets run through.Reporting to the Sr Manager of Developer Tools, you'll collaborate closely with engineering leadership across Docker, product engineering teams, platform teams, and ultimately customers as internal tools evolve into product offerings.
What Would Make Someone Successful in This Role
You're a technical leader who excels at the intersection of developer experience, platform engineering, and systems design. You think in platforms and golden paths, building once and enabling dozens of teams to move faster. You have strong opinions on what makes developer tools great: invisible by default, indispensable once adopted, and measurable in the workflows engineers already use.You have deep experience across the breadth of the developer tooling stack, CI/CD, build systems, observability infrastructure, and developer platforms, and working knowledge of LLM integration and AI agent development. You understand the nuances of internal platforms: designing for adoption, not mandate; plugging into existing workflows before standing up new ones; and earning trust through data before expanding scope. You have exceptional judgment on when to build custom solutions versus integrate existing tools, and you're comfortable navigating a rapidly evolving landscape across both AI and developer infrastructure. You balance technical excellence with pragmatism, shipping iteratively while maintaining high quality bars. Most importantly, you lead through influence and mentorship, elevating the entire engineering organization's technical capabilities.
Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture<ul Principal Software Engineer, Developer Tools (US West Coast)

As AI agents redefine software development, Docker is at the center of that shift, providing the sandboxed environments, verified images, and secure infrastructure that make autonomous workflows trustworthy by default.Docker is shipping a wave of new products this year, with R&D initiatives likely to lead to more, and we're investing heavily in the platform underneath all of it. That platform supports hundreds of engineers across many development teams and carries high-scale production traffic and data transfer every day. It has grown faster than its foundations, and this year is about closing that gap.Today, much of that work still leans on a handful of experts unblocking the same provisioning and operational workflows by hand. The top priority for this role is moving that work from expert-driven support to paved roads: self-service systems with clear ownership, safe defaults, strong guardrails, and adoption we can measure. The goal is a platform teams trust enough to stop thinking about it, one that just works, so they can focus on their own products instead of ours. The concrete version sits on this year's roadmap: spinning up a new global region or application environment should take hours, not days. Right now it takes days. Getting there means building the foundations underneath it. We need a real multi-region, cross-account network architecture and a testing and continuous-deployment flow teams can trust, then a self-service layer on top. We're the container company building our own internal platform, so the bar for "the easy path is also the safe path" is high. You'd be joining a team of four, growing to seven this year (this is one of those hires), and we're looking for a Staff engineer to set technical direction and lead it through real production adoption.
Responsibilities
This is a Staff-level role, so success is measured by leverage rather than just your own commits. On a team this size you'll stay hands-on in the codebase while also setting direction, aligning teams on pragmatic standards, and carrying platform investments through to adoption. Concretely, you will:

Take ambiguous infrastructure problems and turn them into proposals the org can rally around, then drive them through RFCs and architecture reviews across teams.

Design self-service capabilities and platform APIs (primarily in Go) for onboarding, provisioning, deployment, observability defaults, and day-2 operations, with contracts and docs teams actually use.

Set delivery standards using Terraform, GitOps with Argo CD, progressive rollout, and good testing, including building the continuous-deployment flow we're missing today.

Evolve the multi-tenant EKS foundations toward better reliability, security, scale, and cost: Envoy Gateway ingress, traffic routing, and the multi-region, cross-account connectivity we need.

Improve SLOs, alerting, and incident follow-up on Grafana Cloud so production gets safer and less dependent on heroics.

We judge this work by outcomes the consuming teams feel: how fast they can provision and ship, how much they can do without us, and how reliably it all runs.
AI-assisted operations
We're actively investing in AI-assisted and agentic workflows to cut operational toil. We care that they stay safe, auditable, and human-reviewed. You'll help shape where these earn their place and where they don't. Early targets include:

Alert enrichment and incident context-gathering: assembling the relevant signals, history, and runbook so the on-call engineer starts with context instead of a blank page.

Runbook-assisted diagnosis and remediation recommendations, with a human in the loop on anything that changes production.

Onboarding and readiness assistants that answer the questions our experts answer today.

If you've built operational automation and have a healthy skepticism about where automation belongs, this is a place to put both to work.On-callOperational ownership is part of the job. You'll join the rotation after onboarding and shadowing. As a Staff engineer, you'll also improve the health of on-call itself, with better alerts, stronger runbooks, less toil, and blameless postmortems aimed at prevention.
Qualifications

8+ years of professional, hands-on, full-time software engineering experience in backend, infrastructure, or platform engineering.

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

Strong software engineering in Go or a similar language: design, testing, debugging, review, long-term maintainability.

A track record designing, shipping, and operating cloud services or infrastructure platforms in production. We hire for skill and impact, not years.

Deep expertise in at least one of: Kubernetes, networking, cloud platforms, reliability engineering, or developer platforms, plus solid Linux, networking, and production-ops fundamentals.

Experience setting technical direction and leading work that needs cross-team alignment.

Clear written and verbal communication in a remote environment (RFCs, design docs, incident writeups).

Nice to have: EKS and ingress/CNI/service-mesh experience; observability with OpenTelemetry/Prometheus/Grafana; CI/CD and progressive delivery (GitHub Actions, Argo CD, canaries); experience leading migrations or adoption programs across teams. You don't need every item here. We value deep expertise in one area, strong systems judgment, and curiosity across the rest.

What to Expect

First 30 days

Build context, meet partner teams, ship your first change, shadow on-call.

First 90 days

Own a strategic platform problem with a clear plan and metrics; lead an improvement from design to production.

One Year Outlook

Lead a major cross-team initiative (for example, self-service provisioning of new regions and environments, or the multi-region networking and CD foundations behind it) and establish durable patterns that change how Docker engineers build and operate services.

Docker considers visa sponsorship on a case-by-case basis based on business needs. We use Covey as part of our hiring and / or promotional process for jobs in NYC and certain features may qualify it as an AEDT.
