Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
Guest & Host Technology builds the end-to-end experience that connects people around the world. Our team owns the identity and privacy layer beneath that experience: the systems that determine who can see what about whom, in what context, and why. That includes migrating how the rest of the company references users (moving from raw, global user identifiers to relationship-scoped identity), and building the privacy controls behind features like trip sharing and profile visibility. Get this layer wrong and it either breaks trust or breaks the product; our job is to make sure it does neither.
The Difference You Will Make:
We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to help build and scale the backend systems behind user identity and privacy. You'll be reasoning about relationship-scoped access (who's allowed to see this, given the specific context they're asking from), and building systems that other teams across the company depend on to do the same correctly.
You'll work across true backend fundamentals: service architecture, data modeling, authorization logic, and migration tooling that needs to run safely at Airbnb's scale without breaking the dozens of teams who consume these systems.
A Typical Day:

Design and build backend services and APIs that enforce identity and privacy rules consistently across the company's product surfaces

Contribute to large-scale migrations (e.g., moving service and client code off legacy identity patterns) — including the tooling that makes those migrations safe to run broadly, not just the one-off fixes

Define and evolve authorization logic for context-scoped data access, and reason clearly about edge cases (e.g., who's allowed to see what, and why that answer differs by relationship or product surface)

Partner with the teams building on top of your systems — messaging, trips, profile, and beyond — to make sure privacy primitives are usable and hard to misuse

Participate in design and code reviews, and raise the bar for correctness on a part of the codebase where mistakes are costly

Debug and resolve production issues with clear, structured root-cause analysis rather than surface-level fixes

Your Expertise:

6+ years of professional backend software engineering experience, with strong fundamentals in service-oriented architecture, API design, and data modeling

Proficiency in Java and/or Kotlin, and comfort working within a microservices environment (RPC frameworks, service IDLs, dependency injection)

Experience designing systems with correctness and authorization as first-class concerns, not an afterthought

A track record of shipping migrations or infrastructure changes that other teams depend on, with attention to backward compatibility and rollout safety

Strong written communication. You can clearly document a problem, its root cause, and trade-offs between solutions before escalating or proposing a fix

Comfort with ambiguity: you can take a complex, evolving privacy or identity requirement and turn it into a concrete technical design without needing every detail spelled out

Senior Staff Software Engineer, Tech Foundations

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Online Data organization empowers Airbnb's builders to create real-time data experiences through intuitive data interfaces and tools — no database expertise required. Within Online Data, the Transactional Storage Services team owns all of Airbnb's online serving stores and databases.
We design, build, and operate a new source-of-truth, open-source NewSQL database running on stateful Kubernetes. It hosts Airbnb's critical user, listing, and financial data, along with the essential database capabilities that support it: backup and restore, change data capture (CDC), and multi-tenancy.
The Community You Will Join
We're hiring across two teams within Transactional Storage Services. Both are described below.

Database Kernel: The Kernel team owns performance, reliability, and stability for Airbnb's NewSQL engine at scale, spanning storage, query execution, consensus, CDC, and central routing and shard management. In this role you'll do deep technical investigation of database internals and SQL latency and availability issues, and partner closely with our open-source database vendor on root cause analysis and upstream contributions.

Database Adoption: The Adoption team builds the infrastructure that moves Airbnb's data workloads onto NewSQL: eventually consistent two-way replication between databases, fully automated failover and failback, and a migration operator. In this role you'll work across Kernel, SRE, and the ORM, KV, and SQL interface teams to make onboarding and migration smooth for internal customers.

Examples of the Difference You'll Make

Dig into the query and storage layers to explain latency differences between B-tree and LSM-based storage engines.

Design and implement traffic prioritization at the storage layer for connection pooling.

Validate and safely roll out a new CDC architecture while guaranteeing full transactional correctness across shards.

Build the frameworks and tooling around our NewSQL database — monitoring, observability, permissions, and service discovery integration.

Your Expertise

5+ years building and operating large-scale distributed systems — storage, data ingestion, backup and restore, or streaming.

Hands-on experience with database or storage internals: query execution, storage engines, replication, or consensus.

Ability to own and dive deeply into a complex codebase, ideally an open-source one.

Experience maintaining, analyzing, and debugging high-severity production incidents.

Writes clean, testable, maintainable code.

Strong collaboration and communication skills in a remote working environment.

Strong ownership and a consistent track record of delivery.

Mobile Software Engineer, Quality Platform

Airbnb was born in 2007 when two hosts welcomed three guests to their San Francisco home, and has since grown to over 5 million hosts who have welcomed over 2 billion guest arrivals in almost every country across the globe. Every day, hosts offer unique stays and experiences that make it possible for guests to connect with communities in a more authentic way.
The Community You Will Join:
Passport & Commerce builds the trusted account and commerce foundation that lets anyone, anywhere, become part of the Airbnb community — from their first sign-up, through the profile and connections they build, to every booking and business transaction along the way.
We're a newly formed org within Guest & Host that brings together identity, account, and commerce foundations under one roof. Our mission is to move Airbnb beyond the transaction — building a world where accounts create trust, value sticks, and what our community earns travels with them, and their businesses, wherever they go.
You'll work closely with Payments and Wallet engineering, Identity & Privacy, Profile & Community, and Guest & Host product, design, and data science partners as we stand up this team's roadmap and technical foundations.
The Difference You Will Make:
As a Staff Software Engineer on the Passport team, you will be a key architect behind the next generation of our account platform, directly influencing how millions of guests and hosts experience Airbnb. You'll set technical direction for how account state, eligibility, and entitlements are computed, stored, and served at scale across every surface where a guest or host interacts with Airbnb.
Success in this role looks like a Passport platform that is reliable and extensible enough to support new programs and partner integrations without re-architecture — measured through service reliability (uptime, latency, correctness of entitlement calculations), the speed at which new offerings can launch, and adoption of your platform by other teams across Airbnb.
A Typical Day:

Design and evolve the core services and data models that track account state, eligibility, and entitlements across millions of accounts

Partner with product and design to translate new product concepts into scalable, extensible technical designs

Collaborate with Payments and Wallet engineering to ensure credits, discounts, and host-funded programs settle correctly end-to-end

Set technical direction and lead design reviews across a growing team, mentoring engineers and raising the bar on system design

Drive cross-team architecture decisions with Identity & Privacy and Profile & Community teams to keep account state consistent with Airbnb's broader Passport model

Identify and resolve reliability, scalability, and data-integrity risks before they affect guests or hosts

Your Expertise:

9+ years of experience designing and scaling complex, distributed backend systems, with a proven track record of technical leadership in high-growth environments

A track record as a technical leader who has set architecture direction for a team or domain — not only delivered individual features

Deep expertise in distributed systems fundamentals, including data consistency, caching, service decomposition, and API design at scale

Experience building or operating systems involving financial transactions, entitlements, or other stateful account data is strongly preferred

Experience mentoring senior engineers and influencing technical decisions across multiple teams

Comfort operating with ambiguity on a newly formed team, including helping define team scope, roadmap, and technical foundations

Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience driving alignment across engineering, product, and design partners
