Job Description
Groupon is a marketplace where customers discover new experiences and services everyday and local businesses thrive. To date we have worked with over a million merchant partners worldwide, connecting over 16 million customers with deals across various categories. In a world often dominated by e-commerce giants, we stand out as one of the few platforms uniquely committed to helping local businesses succeed on a performance basis.
Groupon is on a radical journey to transform our business with relentless pursuit of results. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. The impact here can be immediate due to our scale and the speed of our transformation.
We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have the resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. As an Operational SG&A Staff Accountant, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the accurate recording, analysis, and reporting of Selling, General & Administrative (SG&A) expenses.
This role is essential for supporting month-end close activities, ensuring compliance with GAAP, assisting with process improvements, and partnering with business units to streamline financial reporting. If you’re detail-oriented, thrive in a fast-paced, SOX-compliant environment, and enjoy working cross-functionally — this role is for you!
Key Responsibilities
Prepare and record journal entries related to SG&A expenses (e.g., software subscriptions, facilities, consulting fees). Perform account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner. Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close activities. Assist in preparing internal reports and analysis for management and external auditors.
Monitor and analyze SG&A expense fluctuations through variance analysis. Partner with department leaders to provide financial insights and improve expense tracking. Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls (SOX). Support external audits and quarterly SEC reporting needs as applicable.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A minimum of 1–3 years of relevant accounting experience (preferably at a US GAAP publicly traded company). Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal controls. Proficiency in ERP systems (e.g. NetSuite), Excel/Google Sheets, and Alteryx. Detail-oriented with strong analytical and communication skills.
Working knowledge of AI tools and functionalities to streamline workflows, improve efficiency, and enhance overall productivity. What Makes You Successful Here: You take ownership of your work and deliver results with precision and integrity. You’re adaptable—able to balance structure with creativity in a fast-moving environment.
You seek to make processes better, not just compliant. You bring curiosity, collaboration, and humility to every project. The Details: Location: Downtown Chicago (hybrid, 2 days a week in-office) Salary Range: $65,000 – $79,000, plus eligibility to participate in a performance-based bonus program. Estimated Total OTE: Approximately $68,250 – $82,950 annually, based on achievement of individual and company performance goals and subject to the terms of the applicable bonus plan.
