Two of the best articles on salary negotiation that I've come across are Ten Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer by HaseebQ and Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued by Patrick McKenzie. I’ve spoken about them several times on my TikTok account, , but wanted to share them here in a blog post.

Ten Rules for Negotiating a Job Offer

The first article, written by a professional poker player turned coding bootcamp graduate turned new grad software engineer, shares HaseebQ's "ten rules of negotiation" which include:

  • Get everything in writing
  • Always keep the door open
  • Information is power
  • Always be positive
  • Don’t be the decision maker
  • Have alternatives
  • Proclaim reasons for everything
  • Be motivated by more than just money
  • Understand what they value
  • Be winnable

Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued

The second article by Patrick McKenzie is a comprehensive read that delves into the psychological differences between a job candidate's mindset and a company's mindset during negotiations. Patrick does an excellent job of helping readers shift their mindset to embrace negotiation and explains that you can trivially pick up $5,000 in salary negotiations just by improving your negotiation skills. He also covers similar guidelines to Haseeb's 10 rules and explains that understanding the mental model of your employer is crucial to successful negotiations.

Final Thoughts

Both articles provide valuable insights and examples for conducting a successful job search and have greatly influenced my own approach to job hunting. Together, they've helped my friends and I earn hundreds of thousands, if not millions, collectively, in increased compensation over the years.
